I have a 1997 Buick Regal. Last week I tried to shut it off and the ignition would shut off just enough to kill the engine but all the controls were on and I couldn't get the key out. I put an inkpen in the access hole in the bottom of the steering column to knock it loose so I can get the key out. The Buick dealer told me it would take $500.00 for a new shifter to fix the problem. Are there any other options for this?

try a independent repair shop, they are used to fixing these kind of problems without replacing every part in the steering column.
