Hello Mary Beth,
To check your transmission fluid you first run the car till it is at normal operating temperature. You will then, with engine still running, pull out the transmission dipstick you will be looking for marks about 1 1/2 inches - 2 inches from the tip. There should be an area the is cross hatched the fluid should be at the top of the cross hatched area, if it is half way between the area or less you will need to add some transmission fluid.
