The temperature light came on. The mechanic changed the thermostat, but the light comes on and there is no heat and when the temperature light goes off the low coolant light comes on and when that goes out the needle on the indicator goes down to normal and I have heat until this process starts over again. The mehanic says I need another head gasket or a rebuilt engine. What do you think?

It could be the head gasket, but that doesn't mean you need a new engine. As far as this is concerned, make sure the radiator is flushed, the coolant level is full, and there are no air locks in the system by bleeding the cooling system.

What you have described can be a bad head gasket, but the things I listed can also cause it.

Let me know if you have other questions.
