It could be the head gasket, but that doesn't mean you need a new engine. As far as this is concerned, make sure the radiator is flushed, the coolant level is full, and there are no air locks in the system by bleeding the cooling system.
What you have described can be a bad head gasket, but the things I listed can also cause it.
