The low coolant light comes on intermittently. No seeming relationship to outside air temperature, length of time the engine has run, etc. Temperature stays within limits and does not move significantly when the light comes on or goes out. I've topped off the antifreeze level with no apparent effect. What is the most likely cause of the light coming on?

There is a coolant level switch in the overflow. It may be going bad.
