i cant get the rear brake pads back on. i have compressed the the center of the caliper but it seems the caliper wont fit over the new pads. am i doing something wrong?

Did you back off the small star wheel between the top of the brake shoes? This gets moved when the parking brake gets used. Tour new shoes are thicker than the old ones and this wheel needs to be backed off so the shoes will sit closer (smaller diameter) together so the drum will fit back over them.

A word on doing rear drum brakes.. Take apart only one side at a time so you can use the other side for reference when re-assembling.
