I have a battery that is marginal but a alternator that was bad. i replaced the alternator, jump started the car then disconnected the jumper cables and the car dies.the DC voltage I read when the car is runnung is 12.5. It seems as if the new alternator is not making charge voltage. And I know that the voltage regulator is integral to the alternator What else is in the charging circuit that would be enabling me to make 13 to 14 VDC

see if there is a place around your area the rebuilds starter and alternators. places like this can test the alternator to see if it's any good. or just take back the alternator. it's very possible you have a defect. one more thing before you do this, make sure all the connections are tight.
