1988 Buick Reatta fuel pump relay

i replaced the fuel pump relay and the 15amp fuse the car started and ran in idle for about 15 minutes. Then i test drove it to see if the problem was resolved and i got about a 1/4 mile away the fuse and i believe the relay blew again. what would make them keep blowing like that

faulty fuel pump will cause the fuse / relay to keep failing
