My milage dropped about 1 mile a gallon and my fuel pump seems to be coming on frequently, Could the problem be a fuel filter?

You fuel pump is supposed to stay on at all times while your engine is running. If it doesn't, then your engine will cut off.

If it's making strange noises, then it may be going bad. Your fuel filter will make your engine run terrible if it's clogged, but it can concievably cause you poor gas mileage.

When is the last time you did a complete tune up??? And when your engine dies, does the check engine light come on???

With so many miles on your car, mileage is bound to begin dropping off anyway, as a matter of normal engine wear.
