Engine Mechanical problem
1989 Buick Park Avenue 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Battery is dead--car will start and run while battery charger is hooked up to it--engine dies when battery charger is turned off. Is the problem primarily alternator trouble or bad battery?

Welcome to the forum, I'd have to check the charging system. Use a digital voltmeter across the battery posts, everything turned off, the reading for a fully charged battery is around 12.6 volts. Then take second reading, engine running, the second ready should be higher than the first, if the charging system is working.
