Not every time, but quite often, when we turn a corner in either direction, the brake light comes on. Most of the time it will go out after I get above 40 mph and other times it stays on until it is parked a while.

I have not had any brake work done to this car. What can be causing the light to keep coming on?

There's a "Brake Switch" under you dash and connected to the brake pedal where the lever is hinged at the top.

Sometimes these go bad and need replacing. Have it checked.
