2000 Buick Lesabre geared up and bad gas mileage

My car sounds like its running in low gear, at a high speed, yet the RPMs are not raised up. Since it has been running like this, my gas mileage has gone from 23 down to 18. What would cause this?

Have it scanned for trouble codes. It could be a transmission problem.
