Does a fuel pump noise increase mean the pump is going bad

Not necessarily. All of your cars components will eventually wear. And when most elctrical components age to a certain point, they sound/feel a bit different from when they were new.

So your fuel pump making a louder noise than usual could be normal wear.

But yes, your pump could also be ready to fail. It depends on how old it is, how many times it's been run dry, and whether or not it's been/is contaminated.

You could do a fuel pressure check to check the condition of your pump. If you do this check at the fuel rail, then you'll need to make sure your fuel pressure regulator is working properly and that your fuel filter is flowing freely. Otherwise you'll get wrong information.

You could disconnect the fuel output line from the pump and measure pressure there. This will eliminate the other components in the system and give you a true reading of the pumps performance.
