1998 Buick Lesabre Fan works on and off

The fan will work when it wants to, or I have to lift up the hood and tap the fan motor with the snow brush etc, and then it works either low speed or high speed for a while then it stops.
After I turn off the car, and start it again the fan does not work about 90% of the time.
