1992 Buick Lesabre 3.8 liter, 74,000 miles

When the engine is idling there is a strange oder in the car like permanent marker. Someone suggested it might be a problem with the catalytic converter. Is this true?

yes it could be a crack in the exhaust system, but it could also be a bad heater core, dependent on the odor. Heater core has a sweet smell to it becase of the antifreeze.
