I have about a +/- 1/2 inch end play, left to right at the wheel (y-axis) and an observed rattle sometimes when hitting a bump. I observe no steering linkage slack at the suspension due to wear. However, the slack seems to be coming from the location of the rack assembly. Is this linkage slack normal? If not, is there a slack adjustment that can be made? If not, is a replacement of the rack assembly required?

make sure the pinch bolt at the steering shaft coupler is tight. (where the shaft connects to the rack) They will sometimes become loose and create freeplay in the steering.
