The alternator on my 2005 Buick LaCrosse needs to be replaced. I have managed to get a new one and removed the old one. I am having problems getting the alternator belt back on the alternator as the tension will not release is there a trick? Is there a tool I need to release and reattach the tension? How do I do this, help!

Hi:
There is a belt tensionier that you need to turn to remove the tension. Some use a 1/2" ratchet to move, others you need to use a box wrench. If you go to the Popular Sites Links on this page, then select Drive Belt Routing Diagrams and put your car's info in, you'll get a picture of the routing and it will identify where the tensionier is located.

I hope this helps.

Joe
