I started my car and it was knocking and not running right. I checked the oil and it was almost empty. I had the oil changed about 2 months ago. The oil light never came on. There is no sign of a leak. The engine did not lock up. The mechanic tells me I need a new engine. My wife says I should accept the responsibility because I was driving the car when it happened. I didn't do anything wrong. I have had many cars and never had one where the oil just dried up. Is it possible?

Sounds like you're leaking somewhere else-if its the oil drain plug that's leaking it probably cross-threaded during the oil changed and caused your problem-so much of savings on the quickie lube services. Sorry bud -you probably need another engine if it continues to knock-the engine bearing got eating up with no oil to lubricate it.
