During the past four days, I've had a difficult time starting the car later in the day. I will try once, twice and then, on the third try when I've gunned the gas pedal, it will start normally. On the first day it happened, we got stranded somewhere late at night and AAA had to jump the battery. We took it to the shop and they replaced our year-old battery. We thought all was fine, but it's been having the same one-two-three problem since then. I work in a dangerous part of town and I'm afraid I'm going to be stranded somewhere unsafe. We took it to the shop again today and the staff tested it for an hour and couldn't find anything wrong. The car runs great otherwise, but lately we've felt more heat coming from the engine into the interior. What could be preventing our car from starting properly?

When this happens, does the starter work?
