1998 Buick Century the fans that cool the radiator

Engine Cooling problem
1998 Buick Century 6 cyl Automatic

the fans that cool the radiator do not seem to turn on. do they run all the time or just when the radiator needs cooling? my service engine light blinks constantly now. when i opened the hood i notice there was no coolant in the reserve tank so i filled it up. and ran the car awhile, thats when i noticed the fans where not comming on. thank you, donna

they only come on when needed, or when the ac is turned on.

get the check engine light scanned, it may explain the fans or it could be something completely different.
