My daughter has a 1998 Buick. It is a nice running car. It's been hot in Fresno and at the end of a night. The car would kick over but then die. The smell of gas was under the hood with the oil and another gage on. Not the check engine light. Would like to solve the problem myself. Maybe the chip or
fuses

Hello,

So, did the engine start when it cooled down?

If the starting issue is only when the engine is hot, it could be due to vapor lock in the fuel system.
When the fuel in the fuel line boils due to heat, the vaporized fuel creates back pressure in the fuel system. This will prevent fuel from going into the engine.
This issue can also happen due to clogged vent lines. This will make the vapor mix with fuel to rush out of the tank and will have starting issue when hot.

You test the fuel pressure when the engine is hot. Low fuel pressure can indicate this issue.

This vehicle should have 41-47 PSI of fuel pressure, with the key on and engine off.

Please let me know a few more details of what you have been experiencing.
Thank you.
