THe engine runs ok but when put in gear, the transmission slips in drive and 3rd gear. Until this happened, it was running fine.

When the last time you service the transmission? fluid/filter
You don't have that much choice here except to have the tranny pressure tested to find out more what's going on. Could be a shift solenoids or valve body/clutches/bands, throttle/governor pressure problems etc.
