Gas/brake, a "bonk" sounds in the front end. If I put the car in neutral, and brake, it makes the same sound. What is it?

check the ball joint and upper strut bearing for play by raising the car, grabbing the tire at 6 and 12 o'clock and rocking. Make sure the strut mount nuts in the engine compartment (the three smaller ones around the circumference, not the big central one) are snug.
