I have a whinning noise coming from the serpantine belt near the air conditioner compressor. The air conditioner works fine, but the noise changes in tone and noise level depending if I turn the air on or off. I have replaced the belt, the powersteering pump pulley, and the water pump, but the whinning persists. The tensioner pulley also checks out fine, can I change the pulley on the compressor, or am I going to have to change the compressor--Thanks in advance for your help

I believe you can change the pulley, but I don't think that is the problem. If it is a whining noise, are you sure it isn't a bearing or the alternator?

Thank you for your reply. I have traced the noise to the bearing on the clutch pulley of the air conditioner. I have found a replacement for this ($87), and can install it without removing the air conditioner, by using a puller available from carquest, or autozone.($34) It takes a bit of gymnastics to get the job done when working from the top of the engine, but the $550 quote from the repair shops to correct the problem is great incentive to do it yourself

It's never easy. However, at that price, I can understand wanting to do it yourself. Also, I believe you'll get the money back when you return the tool.

Let me know if you run into trouble, and thanks for using 2carpros. Com.
