Noises problem
1990 Buick Century 6 cyl Automatic

I was given a 1990 Buick century to drive to school and back. It was running smooth, until one day I went to pass someone as soon as I passed them the car has started to make a "popcorn popping" sound when i hold the gas pedal steady. It loosing power going up hills and the noise is a lot worse. It seems to be getting worse. If I'm at a complete stop, and I accelerate the car "pops" really bad and hesitates until I can get it to around 35mph after that it still pops, but it isn't as prominent.

I am sorry i can't describe it anymore then that... I was thinking it was spark plugs, but someone told me it seems like the catalytic converter... please help!
