1988 Buick Century Gear Shift Broke

The Gear Shift will not go into gear on the steering column. It just goes up and down and will not find a gear? It is like the car is stuck in neutral, but it won't start?

it sounds as if you have a coupl eof problems here, one may be the nuetral safety switch as well as either broken linkage or a cable broken. You'll have to look around and see how your liknage is hooked up. Your nuetral safety switch should be under the dash at the bottom of the steering column. You migh talso drive the pin out of the shifter and look and see ifit broke there at the bottom.......
