Had to brake heavily after that the brakes were not working properly, and when I got to my destination fluid was coming out of rear driver side wheel.

Either a wheel cylinder is leaking, a steel line is rusted through, or a rubber flex hose popped a leak. Of those, none are terribly serious or expensive to repair.

"Not work properly" can mean a dozen different things, but, yes, absolutely a leak will cause problems.
