My brake lights are staying on for several minutes after each time I use them. I checked the brake switch. The lights stay on with the brake switch removed.

This can be what is called the integrated power module problem. The brake lights enter and exit that a mechanic will need to scan for codes. the brake light switch is probably sending the signal then ending but TPIM module is slow to respond.
