Brake light on

My brake light came on brakes are acting fine. My son's father took it to a mechanic he said its a bad solenoid. What does that mean? Is it something i have to take care of ASAP and is it expensive? Thanks

Can you tell me if the brake light is red or yellow? Also, is the ABS light on? Also, do you mean a wheel speed sensor is bad and not a solenoid? If you have the estimate sheet from the shop, tell me exactly what it says.
