The brake light comes on when I brake hard but not when I drive normally. Why?

Have you checked the fluid level in the master cylinder? If it is low and then you hit the brakes, it could be tripping the sensor that controls the light. If the fluid is low, I would suggest checking the brake pads. They are probably due to be changed.

This is a guide on how to change brake pads: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-replace-front-brake-pads-and-rotors-fwd. You can also use it to check the pad thickness. If the pads are worn, then change them and add any necessary fluid to the master cylinder.

Let us know.
