I will admit, I drove the car down to virtual empty. It started sputtering and would stay started. Limped home. I've fueled it, but same. It will start for about 5 seconds, then start to sputter, then die. Did I clog the fuel filter possibly by running it so low on gas and picking up some debris at the bottom of the tank?

Admitting your sins is the first step towards redemption, you are here by absolved of your sins my child. Just kidding. The possibility of the fuel pump "burning up" is a very high possibility as the fuel that it pumps is the coolant for the pump. If run dry, the pump is at risk.
