1998 BMW Z3 Gear shifter

I have a '98 Z3M roadster that is in need of the gear shifter replaced. There are 2 wires that are connected inside that apparently lights up the shift patterns on the top of the shifter. Can I cut these when replacing with the new one?

There should be a connector in the shift boot.
