1997 BMW Z3 Acceleration

This has happened twice that the car will accelerate by it self while driving. Turning the key off and restarting stops this condition. It seem to be a steady increase of acceration whenit happens. It has just started and has not happened in the past. Thank you in advance for any information. The car is equiped with cruise control.

The cruise is not activated.

Very odd, I would think that starting with the cruise actuator, perhaps disconnecting it, to see if that is where the problem is.
