2002 BMW X5 Check Brake Lights, Check Rear Lights Message

I get the "Check Brake Lights, Check Rear Lights" Message on my X-5 yet all the lights seem to be working. Any idea what would cause this?

The bulb holder interface at the tail lamp assembly may be burned/pitted. Replacement is recommended.
