2002 BMW X5 Air Conditioning and Blower

The Air Conditioning and Blower have stopped working but when I slap the passanger side lower area of the dash down where your left leg rests against the carpet the blower comes on. What is going on???

The wiring harness may be intermittent or have a bad connection. The problem with the harness plagues the early E53 cars, BMW had a bulletin for bad crimps at the final stage unit connector.
