My BMW service rep. told me I need to replace my oil separator, either now or for sure before colder weather arrives. I am taking a long trip very soon from Chicago to Santa Fe and back. Is it safe to drive the car long distances in warm weather? I read hundreds of BMW oil separator 'horror stories' in cold weather. What about the summer months?

You should replace it before the trip. I would, it causes too much manifold "vacuum" to be present in the crankcase and can cause other issues.
