2001 BMW X5 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 123 km miles

There is a cracking noise from the tranfer box then disappears at speed,is it a chain or what?

Or what. The noise you hear is not transmitted through cyberspace to me. Some things are simply improbable. Individual parts are often not made available and replacement of the entire transfer case might be called for.
