1998 BMW M3 SMG Gearbox

My gearbox is taking 1 second pause between all gears and have had a SMG light flash, a few times. Whats wrong ?

There are many possibilities, what mode is it in? Has the dealer been involved? I need more to go on, the results of a short test would be helpful.
