2000 BMW 740 does not Reverse

The car goes forward and seems to shift properly going forward , However the car ( gear ) does not reverse. we cannot back up. ( except by pushing it ) , before this happened mysteriously the car lost all its coolant.
What may be the problems? , Thanks for your help
