I have a 1995 BMW 740i. Last night after using remote key to roll down windows I got into the car and when I put the key in it would not turn. I turned the wheel back and forth, then the key turned, but not all the way. Steering was still locked and so is the shifter. The key is turning but stops before it can hit the starter. I dont want to force it to turn and break. What could the problem be?

The internal lock mechanism in the steering column may have failed and if so will require the replacement of same. This requires some special tools and removal of the lock cylinder for inspection. Do you wish to attempt these repairs yourself?
