1996 BMW 735 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 80 000 miles

sometimes when i drive my car my steering wheel goes hard, then after a while its soft again, is my power steering broken? thanks

The power steering on the car uses what BMW calls Servotronic. It is speed controlled and it varies the amount of power assist available to the driver, more for parking lot maneuvering and less for the freeway. The system can have several types of faults, from module failure to low fluid level.
