i recently bought this vehical and everything runs really well i just need a muffler on it.

i was wondering if a 1988 bmw 740il muffler would fit on it???? if not which is the best universal on for it?

i need a muffler to pass smog.

and also does this car have to be hot before i get it smogged like some other bmws?

There was no 740 in `88. The muffler can be anything that will fit. Yes it needs to be warmed up to pass smog.
