I have a 1987 bmw 535is. I recently replaced the differential cover. Upon replacing the cover I used a self-applying gasket maker. I neglected to wait the 24 hr recommended period for the gasket maker to seal, the gear oil leaked. Well on the road, my car was making a bad metal on metal noise, and a horrible burning smell was wafted to my nostrils.

My car now doesn't move in reverse and barely movers in 1st, but with the metal on metal noise very apparent.

Could this be a gear issue in the differential?

Well id pull the cover and see if it is mangled, but rule of thumb is you dont have to wait to use the gasket sealer. I put it together immediately and fill with fluid all the time. Might not be related.
