2002 BMW 530i oil burning

I can smell what I believe to be oil burning yet it is not over heating nor does it seem to be using oil. It does not smell all the time

Possibly the valve cover gasket is seeping and will require replacement. Have an inspection of the engine performed as soon as possible. It is a typical issue with that model and at that age I would expect it.
