I have this issue with my Bimmer. It has a brake light issue. The brake lights come on on occasion. It faults on the dashboard. I traced it on the electrical wiring diagrams in the " Bentley Publishers "repair manual. On Page EWD-165 is the first page of the external lights wiring diagram. It shows me that from the lamp control module slot 12. Is the brake pedal status. Running on the blu/red line to an unknown dot. that i assume to be a rely. Then to the Brake light switch before heading to the fuse box. My question is this and it comes in 2 parts. Is the fault the relay or the switch ? If its one or the other. Where is it located ? Because it doesnt specify in the manual. Thank you.

This sounds like a faulty brake lamp switch, they fail often. Replace it and see if the issue goes away.
