My car has just recently developed a problem. Sometimes I insert the key and turn it to start and the engine fires correctly. Other times i turn the key and the lights, radio, air conditioning etc all work but the starter doesn't do anything. After doing this for several time and then holding the key in the start position for a minute suddenly it will fire and start. What are the possible problems? Is it the starter, some other electrical malfunction or other problem with the engine?

Sounds like a problem with the drive away protection, It's called EWS. Have you got another Key to try?
