2000 bmw 528 computer

It's a 2000 528...I got it non-running. Seems it was the computer...I smelled the computer, opened it up, and saw a melted chip.

So...kicked the dog. No. kicked a Republican.

Got a used computer...needed to be set to the car, so sent the car to the dealer...I live in a small town, but we have a dealer- richest guy in town. Drives a Caddy.

Everytime he tries to set the used computer it reads "tampered" or some such. Have to sell my house, and my oldest daughter into slavery, and my ENTIRE Harley hat collection for a new computer.

Any ideas? I'll buy dinner for the guy who has the fix!

you will need to have the DME replaced with a new unit and have it coded to the car

Thanks Dr. Hargarty (any relation to JaneMansfield's friend?) Is their any less expensive alternative to the dealer? Can the DME be ordered less expensivly from the computer manufacturer, the part manufacturer, or a jobber, and then given to the dealer for programming?

Does anyone repair these things?

there may be a solution for your problem in the after market realm. the way BMW sets up the logic for these cars is because of the insurance laws in Europe.
there is a device in the car called EWS
it reads information from the key (there is a chip in the key) and compares it with the information in the EWS module. BMW makes it this way to keep people from swapping the control units and then stealing the cars.
if there is someone out there who repairs them, I haven't heard of them. however, I will research this and repost right away. stay tuned

Lokk forward to your research. Had to go the dealer route...couldn't find any other solution...but there is one...somewhere. It's just a computer.

I paid the deal as much as if it were a laptop. That gives head.
