1997 528i, got home, turned car off, locked it from the trunk, as the key-fob does not work, even with new batteries. Two hours later, unlocked it from the trunk, turned it on, and even though the shifter was operational, the steering wheel remained LOCKED!!! Please help.

The steering wheel lock is internally broken and will require replacement.

I also have a 1997 528i that had/has that problem. I took the cover off the steering column and sprayed it with cleaner then wd40. It started working just fine. Once in awhile it gets hung up, but if I shake the steering wheel back and forth it will release. It does not lock up again until the car is shut off. Give it a try it's probably just dirt build up in the steering column. Hope it works for you.
