Just purchased car yesterday and filled up with 89 octane today. shortly afterwards the service engine soon light came on. runs just fine. could it be the lower octane gas as the manual says use 91 octane?

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis,finding out what's going on.

I put a half tank of 93 octane fuel in car and the service engine soon light went off after driving for a few miles.
