Driving my car this morning I noticed that although I had the heat on, no heat was blowing from the vents. Only cool air was coming out. After driving for about ten minutes more I noticed the temperature indicator for the car jumped the the 3/4 mark and then proceeded pretty quickly to the red zone. What causes this? Is the thermostat not working or is it simply a question of adding more coolant?

An immediate inspection is in order, when cooled of course. Low coolant can mean it's leaking somewhere and will present as you have suggested.
